Driving Test Day: What Actually Happens
Why This Guide Matters
For many learners, the biggest challenge on test day isn’t driving — it’s nerves and uncertainty.
This guide will walk you through exactly what happens so you feel prepared, calm, and confident.
Before You Start
Make sure you:
-
Bring your provisional licence
-
Arrive early (10 minutes is ideal)
-
Use the toilet beforehand if needed
👉 Being prepared helps reduce stress
Meeting the Examiner
The examiner will:
-
Introduce themselves
-
Ask you to confirm your details
-
Check your eyesight (reading a number plate)
👉 They are not there to trick you — just to assess your driving
The “Show Me, Tell Me” Questions
You will be asked:
-
One “Tell Me” question (before driving)
-
One “Show Me” question (during the drive)
👉 These are basic car knowledge questions you’ve already practised
The Driving Part (Around 40 Minutes)
This is the main part of your test.
You will:
-
Drive on different types of roads
-
Follow directions from the examiner
👉 Don’t worry about the route — just focus on safe driving
Independent Driving Section
You’ll be asked to drive independently for about 20 minutes.
This could be:
-
Following a sat nav
-
Following road signs
👉 If you go the wrong way, it’s not a fail — stay calm and continue safely
Manoeuvre (One Only)
You’ll be asked to perform one manoeuvre, such as:
-
Parallel park
-
Bay park
-
Pull up on the right and reverse
👉 Take your time — control is more important than speed
Possible Emergency Stop
You may be asked to do an emergency stop.
👉 This doesn’t happen on every test
What the Examiner Is Looking For
They are checking that you are:
-
Safe
-
In control
-
Aware of your surroundings
-
Making good decisions
👉 You do NOT need to be perfect
What Counts as a Fault?
-
Minor fault: small mistake (e.g. late signal)
-
Serious fault: potentially dangerous
-
Dangerous fault: actual danger caused
👉 You can pass with minor faults, but not serious or dangerous ones
Common Reasons People Fail
-
Poor observation at junctions
-
Incorrect use of mirrors
-
Bad decisions at roundabouts
-
Not responding to road signs
👉 These are all fixable with awareness
After the Test
At the end, the examiner will:
-
Tell you the result
-
Explain any faults
If you pass:
👉 You can start driving straight away (once insured)
If you don’t pass:
👉 You’ll know exactly what to work on next
How to Stay Calm on the Day
-
Treat it like a normal lesson
-
Don’t rush
-
Breathe and take your time
-
Focus on one situation at a time
👉 Nerves are normal — even good drivers feel them
Quick Recap
✔ Bring your licence and arrive early
✔ Listen carefully to instructions
✔ Drive safely, not perfectly
✔ Stay calm if you make a mistake
✔ Focus on what’s ahead, not what’s gone
Final Thought
The examiner isn’t looking for perfection — they’re looking for a safe, independent driver.
If you’ve been driving well in lessons, you’re ready.
