MSPSL Breakdown

MSPSL is a systematic approach used for safe driving manoeuvres, particularly when turning or approaching hazards. It stands for Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed, and Look. Here’s how to perform MSPSL step by step:

  1. MirrorCheck your rearview mirror and the appropriate side mirror (left or right, depending on your direction or manoeuvre).
    • Ensure you are aware of the traffic situation behind and beside you.
  2. Signal
    • Indicate your intention by using your signal (indicator) to alert other road users.
    • Signal early enough to give others adequate
    • warning but not so early that it creates confusion.
  3. Position
    • Adjust your car’s position to suit the manoeuvre.
      • For a left turn, move closer to the left side of your lane.
      • For a right turn, position yourself near the centreline (without crossing it).
    • Ensure your position is clear, safe, and legal.
  4. Speed
    • Reduce your speed appropriately for the situation, using the brakes smoothly.
    • If driving a manual car, press the clutch as you slow down to maintain better control and prevent stalling.
    • Select the correct gear for the manoeuvre (e.g., first or second gear for sharp turns).
  5. Look
    • Look ahead and check for hazards, pedestrians, cyclists, or other vehicles.
    • Assess the situation at junctions, roundabouts, or when turning.
    • Look in all directions to ensure it’s safe to proceed.
